Reevaluation Time

In addition to starting this blog as a place to spew my nonsense for fun, I also wanted to use it to keep myself accountable with my poker results.  While I’ve discussed plenty of sessions here I’ve sort of kept overall results off this place for various reasons.  But I’m writing this update today because I’ve been exceeding the goals I had set for myself a few months ago.

Back when I started this in April my goal was to get my bankroll to a certain amount by the first of September and assuming I hit that goal I had a target amount for the end of the year.  A few sessions into June I exceeded the first goal, and last night I exceeded the goal I had set for the end of the year.  So today I’m asking myself “What’s next”? Well I celebrated a bit by buying breakfast for the office, but other than that I need to set new goals, and to do that I needed to look at what I’ve done.

I decided to revisit my sessions, and chart them out and take a look at my progress.  The result is this graph…

BR Graph from April 3rd - July 22nd

BR Graph from April 3rd - July 22nd

As you can see in that time I’ve played 71 total sessions of poker.  Just to be clear I broke my sessions up by each time I played in any game, and if I switched games it counted as a different session.  There were several occasions where I’d be in a 3/6 limit game, jump to a 1/2 NL game, then to a 2/5 NL game just depending on what seating was available.  So that would count as 3 sessions in one day, and was fairly normal for a little while.

April and May were spent primarily grinding out 1/2 NL games, with the occasional 3/6 LHE and 10/20 HOE mixed games tossed in.  June-July have been mostly 2/5 NL games, and it should be pointed out that my Vegas results aren’t exactly accurate.  The money I won in Vegas I spent there plus a little extra so I had a net loss for the trip but was actually way ahead in poker at both 2/5 and 5/10 no limit.  Had I taken the time to chart those sessions you would see that I was probably actually close to exceeding my year end goal in Vegas, but I don’t regret for a second spending the money I did there.  In fact there is a little bit of money I regret not spending, but that’s a story for another time and trust me it has nothing to do with hookers. Vegas as marked on the chart is also the start of July.

So what should I do with this data?  Well right now I’m figuring out hourly rates, and other random statistical data, but in the mean time I need to set a few new goals.

End of July/August Goals

1. Increase session win rate to 75% (currently 66%)

2. Increase bankroll by 33% before the end of August.

3. Get a regular 5/10 NL game organized at the card room and begin taking shots when the lineup looks good.

4. Get to Riverside and/or the Horseshoe some weekend to play with some different opponents.

Success is fun, but it does feel like something is missing today… eh.  Maybe I’m just ready for another vacation.  I plan on playing tonight and Saturday, but Sunday I’ve got a tee time so I need to hit the driving range a bit this weekend too and knock the dust off the clubs, not to mention my swing.  Here is hoping I can shoot something under triple digits considering its the first time I’ve played in years.
